Overview

At ioneer, our mission is rooted in producing the materials necessary for a sustainable, lower carbon future as we work to become a globally significant and responsible producer and supplier of lithium and boron. We have invested considerable effort into developing a project plan for Rhyolite Ridge that ensures shared economic, environmental and social value for the communities in which we operate, and the global community more broadly.

We are committed to adopting best-in-class sustainability practices and reporting frameworks and continuing to expand our disclosure and reporting practices each year.

In laying the foundation for years to come, we have established three sustainability pillars:

Sustainability - Three pillars

Clean Energy

Producing the materials for a sustainable future

ioneer is set to become a globally significant and economical supplier of lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, and boric acid, which are vital materials to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a more sustainable future.

  • Lithium is a critical raw material to enable technologies that reduce climate change. It is an irreplaceable component for batteries essential to electric vehicles and green energy storage systems that lead to emission reductions.
  • Boric acid is a rare, critical raw material. It is used in more than 130 unique applications, such as in powerful magnets for electric cars and wind turbines, and advanced glass for televisions, computers, handheld electronic devices, and solar panels.

Environmentally friendly operation

The unique mineralogy of Rhyolite Ridge allows both lithium and boron to be extracted in a low-cost and environmentally sustainable manner, with low emission power sourced on-site, substantially reduced water usage compared to other lithium mines, and a small surface footprint.

  • Off-grid, energy-neutral processes with zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
  • Low water usage with design enabling recycling of the majority of water used.
  • Air quality strictly maintained through deployment of lowest emissions controls, mobile equipment and technology.

Environment

Environmental stewardship is at the core of ioneer’s mission. We continue to invest considerable time and resources into minimising potential impacts of our Project to the local flora and fauna in the region.

A critical component of our environmental strategy is the preservation of Tiehm’s buckwheat, a rare wildflower that is native to Rhyolite Ridge. ioneer is firmly committed to the long-term viability and reduction of risks to the wildflower and has worked in the following ways to protect, conserve and expand this sensitive species in its natural habitat:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive Tiehm’s buckwheat protection plan that includes strict environmental protection measures which have been in place since ioneer commenced exploration in 2016.
  • Enhancing plant populations through extensive research and propagation programs with the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).
  • Minimising potential operational impacts by implementing various avoidance measures including reducing the amount of surface disturbance and educating employees and contractors about the plant.
  • Working with the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on ensuring the protection of air quality, biology, groundwater, soils, rangelands around the Rhyolite Ridge facility, as well as improving the ability of the Tiehm’s Buckwheat plant to survive and thrive.
  • Engaging with botanical sciences specialists to augment our protection measures.

Enhancing plant population through extensive research

ioneer is engaging with UNR researchers to conduct a propagation and transplant trial for Tiehm’s buckwheat. The project successfully grew over 1,000 Tiehm’s buckwheat seedlings in the UNR greenhouse from seeds collected at Rhyolite Ridge, which were planted in three test sites in the Project Area in 2020. ioneer has expanded its research agreement with UNR, funding a five-year study that will focus on the successful propagation and growth of Tiehm’s buckwheat at Rhyolite Ridge.

Community

We want ioneer to make a positive impact on the global environment and that ability starts in, and with, the support of the local communities in which we operate.

The Rhyolite Ridge Project will have a positive economic impact on Esmeralda County, adjacent counties, the state of Nevada and the entire country over multiple decades.

In the near term, it is expected to create 400-500 construction jobs and 200-300 operating jobs.

Community engagement has been a critical component of our strategy and workstreams since day one and we continue to create initiatives to further support and deepen our relationships in the community.

ioneer Sustainable World Scholarship

In June 2020, we were proud to announce recipients of our inaugural ioneer Sustainable World Scholarship, which was established to invest in Nevada’s future by supporting Tonopah High School students pursuing higher education in Engineering, Science and/or Mining. In response to unprecedented hardships experienced by this year’s graduating students, we increased our commitment to the scholarship program by selecting three recipients. The scholarships will provide financial support to the recipients throughout their college education, subject to the maintenance of a minimum grade point average.

Our People

Our team of dedicated mining, finance and energy industry experts, led by our Board and Management team, is committed to supporting ioneer toward achieving our sustainability vision.

Our Board and Management teams bring the relevant skills and experience to foster and support our vision for sustainability. Their leadership and governance of initiatives, now and into the future, will ensure that ioneer is able to become a responsible and profitable producer.

As we enter this next phase of growth, the ioneer Board is continuing an overall evaluation of the Board and management team, seeking the right composition and structure. We continue our commitment to building a culture that reflects our values of being imaginative, caring, committed and responsible.
